The park was created to give an experience of the Kofun period in Tohoku.
The Oyasuba tombs were discovered in 1991, and after four years of research the big rectangular tomb, dating from the late Fourth Century and measuring 83 meters in length, was determined to be the largest kofun tomb in northeastern Japan. In it were various items like stone bracelets and red ceramic vessels. In September of 2000, this was designated a national historic site. In a 6.5-hectare area, visitors can see the "Kofun" graves, as well as display rooms and hands-on experience areas, like burning the grass, and archeological digging in a park-like area. There is also a playground area with different equipment like jumping springs, rope course etc. for the family to enjoy. For 130 yen, the magatama-making experience is also popular.
